Intro to Poetry
Students will learn the fundamentals of poetic craft in this workshop. Much as a carpenter learns with focused attention to use an awl, saw, chisel, a level, students in this introductory course will practice plying syntax, diction, rhythm, metaphor, and other tools essential to well-made poems. The instructor will deliver craft talks and workshop members will complete writing exercises inside and outside of class. We will read poems by a wide variety of writers including Pablo Neruda, Jane Kenyon, Larry Levis, Paul Celan, and others. We will be responding thoughtfully and supportively to each other's poems in a weekly workshop setting.
Reading Like A Writer
Are you stuck on dialogue? Wondering whether to cut three pages of description? Have you turned a story from first to third and back to first? This course is designed to address these issues and more by looking at how other writers do it and make it work. Each week we will explore the way structure, character, description, exposition, dialogue and the often-elusive point of view work in the stories we are reading. By utilizing a combination of discussion, in-class writing exercises and the keeping of a writer's notebook, you will be aided in understanding and developing these literary techniques in your own writing.
