SUMMARY:Equanimity: Writing and Exile
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Victory Gardens\nModerated by John Rich\, Executive Director of the Guild Literary Complex \nBeing forced to leave one’s homeland can leave one with a sense of loss\, trauma\, and confusion. But for many writers\, exile and political writing can also be a source of creativity and a way to reconnect with a life that seems increasingly distant. Join John Rich as he opens a dialogue with writers exploring first-hand narratives of exile and political activism in their creative works. \nAbout the Panelists\nOsama Alomar is an award-winning Syrian poet and essayist. “He belongs at once to several different important literary traditions. Most immediately evident are two: that of the writer driven into exile from his own country and culture; and that of the writer of very short stories.” –Lydia Davis\, The New Yorker (2013) \nMatilde de la Sierra\, a Guatemalan physician who practiced in a village that was home to Guatemala’s indigenous Mayan population. She was the only medical doctor in the region and – together with the Catholic church – she advocated to build a hospital on land that was used for military training. This put her in conflict with the Guatemalan military. Matilde was abducted and tortured and\, more than a decade later\, still suffers severe effects on her health\, memory\, and flashbacks. \nCoya Paz is a poet\, director\, and lip gloss connoisseur who was raised in Peru\, Bolivia\, Colombia\, Ecuador\, and Brazil before moving permanently to the United States in 1987. Coya is the Artistic Director of Free Street Theatre\, and an Assistant Professor in the Theatre School at DePaul University.

SUMMARY:Poetry Performance Incubator Auditions
DESCRIPTION:The Poetry Performance Incubator is seeking poets and other writers to collaborate on the creation of a workshop production of Like Bread\, a new theatrical performance about making space for a creative life. We are particularly interested in working with poets from a broad range of aesthetics\, backgrounds\, ages\, and Chicago communities. \nInspired by the Roque Dalton poem “Like You\,” Like Bread will explore the relationship between writing and social struggles\, the way that writing can transform a life\, and how challenging (but joyful) it can be to claim oneself “a writer.” \nNoted director (and longtime Incubator artist lead) Coya Paz will facilitate this project. The Guild is particularly interested in working with a multigenerational cast\, and writers of all ages are encouraged to audition. \nTo Audition: \nAuditions will be Thursday\, July 25\, 6:30 PM\, at Free Street Theatre (1419 W. Blackhawk St). Audition slots are 30 minutes and will include you giving a 2-3 minute recital of your original written material\, on-the-spot writing from prompts\, and group theatre exercises. The call back will be Saturday\, July 27\, and by invitation only. The call back will be a full group audition for two hours. \nTo schedule an audition\, email aromero@guildcomplex.org with “Auditions” in subject line\, and give your name\, phone number\, and what time(s) you’re available July 25\, 6:30pm-8:30pm. Then we’ll call you back to schedule your audition.

Her short story collection At-Risk won the Flannery O’Connor Award and is published by University of Georgia Press. \nDavid Lazar (non-fiction judge) Lazar’s books include The Body of Brooklyn and Truth in Nonfiction (both Iowa)\, Powder Town (Pecan Grove); Michael Powell: Interviews and Conversations with M.F.K. Fisher (both Mississippi). Forthcoming is Essaying the Essay from Welcome Table Press. His essays and prose poems have appeared widely in anthologies such as Understanding the Essay\, An Introduction to the Prose Poem (Sentence)\, and Like Thunder: Poets Respond to Violence in America\, and magazines such as Gulf Coast\, Black Clock\, Sentence\, Denver Quarterly\, Best of the Prose Poem\, Southwest Review\, etc. and five of his essays have been “Notable Essays of the Year” according to Best American Essays.
