Guild Literary Complex

TheRAPy 101

RAP 101

On the last Thursday of the month the Guild Literary Complex hosts an a cappella hip-hop series with a diy/underground flair.  Featuring local and national spoken word talent, spin-artists, DJs, and one of Chicago’s premier open mic sets, theRAPy 101 opens the doors to a new generation of poets, musicians, and activists.  Our goals is for rap therapy to act as a curative for urban youth, just as art therapy has been in years past –and why not? Rap and hip hop encompass the experiences of street life, personal narratives, and compelling story telling through beats and poetic lyrics.  This is what the Guild is all about: new voices, new spaces and forward looking programming.

Our curator for this series is Yung Assata who was born and raised in a single-parent household on the South Side of Chicago, Maryiah Winding and her practice are heavily influenced by urban landscapes and social codes. She is now pursuing her BFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she continues to explore identity, art within activism, socioeconomic standards, and childhood tropes within her practice, using music as her medium.

Partners for this event include Iron Heart Production and Iridium Clothing. We meet every last Thursday of the month, doors at 7:30 with curated performances starting at 8:00 PM.  Open Mic follows, with Featured Guest filling out the night.
