From Reginald—
Grace Paley seemed to see life more clearly than everyone else around her. She was always able to see the urgency of justice, amends, and humor, too, in the difficult situations of American life. She fictionalized unforgettably many forms of social, economic and other structural discrimination against women, the miseries caused by racism, the wounding and redeeming everyday relations of husbands and wives, lovers, friends. She used to tell creative writing students, “Write about what nobody wants to hear.” With her students, as with everyone’s, this might become an urging to “write about what you yourself don’t want to hear.” She was a great great spirit.
